During the Spring Semester 2013, I was a Bearcat Buddy at Hays Porter Elementary School. I was assigned a tutee for the duration of the semester where I taught various topics in mathematics. Throughout this time, I met a wonderful student and learned more about her learning and communication style every week. I loved when she wanted to go back to topic we already passed because she liked it so much. This experience was very enriching for me as I love to interact with children and putting smiles on their faces. I intend to continue this throughout my time here in UC as this would be my small contribution to the improvement of the public school education system here in Ohio. Through this experience I also fulfill one of my personal goals: to get involved and make a difference in the community. I think being a Bearcat Buddy is getting one step closer to that!
During Spring Semester 2014, I had the privilege of being apart of the first group of tutors from UC to tutor at Western Hills University High School. I had no idea what to expect when I first started tutoring there, but it turned out to be one of my most enjoyable experiences. I was fortunate to be placed with special education students and tutor them in reading. I use the word fortunate here because I plan to become a developmental-behavioral pediatrician, which is a children's doctor who diagnoses and treats patients with learning and behavioral disabilities and disorders. By completing this experience, I was able to get my feet wet in a field I planned to pursue and this helped confirm the career path I had chosen is the right one for me. I love being apart of the Bearcat Buddies Program and I intend to continue tutoring the remaining semesters I have here at UC.
