This past Spring Semester 2014, I was able to take the honors component of the Intermediate Composition class offered at UC. I have no regrets taking this class as it was such a great learning experience. I had no idea that this class had a service learning requirement. For this particular class, the service learning had to involve using literary skills of some sort. I was fortunate to be involved in a program that counted as a service learning experience for this class which was being a Bearcat Buddy tutor. For the duration of this Spring Semester I was able to tutor special education students in reading. This was a very enjoyable experience as I was able to get a first hand experience of the field that I was going into. My professor was very well-versed in the subject matter as she is a parent of a special needs child. For most of the classes, we discussed a book we were assigned to read which was a memoir of a man who had a developmental disorder known as Asberger's syndrome. We also listened to NPR radio programs about autism spectrum disorder as well as other developmental disorders. Overall, I would highly recommend taking this class because you learn so much about literacy and the various struggles people face when becoming literate whether it be because of a developmental disorder or economic background. As a class, each student documented his/her service project by publishing a PowerPoint slide that was put together by our professor and one of the students as a form of documentation.
